On the same place where a restaurant invites you for abiding today, a hunting lodge was built in 1710 by the intervention of Schönborn, the archbishop of Mainz, where poultry could be hunted. The 3800 metres long brick-lined wall, which defines still the "Alte Fasanerie" with its base area of 107m², was built only 40 years later, in 1750.
Today the natural park is the home of 40 different animal species, which can be observed and feeded from the 15 km long trails between the enclosures. You can inform yourself about the several stories about the forest and its inhabitants at the main entrance in the "Hessischen Forstmuseum" with its 250 m² exposition surface area.
